As a brand new organization, the Vaughan Dog Owners Group needs your support to grow and become a legitimate voice for dog owners in Vaughan.
As responsible dog owners, we have entered into a covenant with our dogs. In return for their unconditional love and friendship, we agree to provide those things which they cannot get on their own. This is a serious commitment.
A cornerstone of that covenant is that we will provide the exercise and social stimulation that our dogs require in order to maintain good health. The best way to accomplish this is to allow our dogs to play with each other and chase each other in a big open space. Playing in our back yards doesn't cut it and neither does walking at a human pace. Dogs need to run!
[In 2008] 28% of respondents indicated that the City should invest in an off-leash area; only 2% rated it a top priority
While we are pleased that there is, finally, an official off-leash park in Vaughan, its location makes it difficult for the majority of dog owners to use. It is time to give dog owners across the city the right to exercise their dogs without fear of legal sanction.
In a household survey which was completed as part of the City's public consultation on the 2008 Active Together Master Plan, only 28% of respondents indicated that the City should invest in an off-leash area; only 2% rated it a top priority1. The City has conceded that "there is some pressure to develop leash free dog parks" in Vaughan2. The City has indicated that it does plan to develop up to five additional dog parks, but the timeline suggests that it could be 2017 before these parks are operational3. While that seems like an extraordinary length of time to develop five parks, unless we can demonstrate to the City that this issue is of greater importance than these numbers would indicate, it is unlikely that we can expect a lot of movement from the City on this issue.
By joining VDOG, you will be helping us take that first step towards convincing the City that this is an important issue. You will be showing your commitment to building a community of dog owners; that you care about being a responsible dog owner and; you will be adding your voice to those of other dog owners in Vaughan. As a group, we will be able to do more than any one of us could accomplish individually.
The Vaughan Dog Owners Group welcomes new members who have an interest in working together to meet our goals. Together, we can make a difference in Vaughan, and we can make a difference in our dogs' lives.
We hope that you will consider becoming a member.
